According to Berkeley Wellbeing, mindset is defined as the set of attitudes or beliefs that we hold.

Our mindset is important because our attitudes and beliefs affect everything we do, feel, think, and experience.

Our mindset influences our perceptions and how we move through the world. Although we have one overall mindset, this can be made up of many smaller mindsets. Some of these help us improve our well-being and succeed in the world. Others hurt our ability to do so. That's why developing certain mindsets can greatly help us reach our goals, enjoy our lives, and be more successful.

Berkeley Wellbeing also outlines six mindsets, each with a continuum, which goes from having 100% of this mindset to having 0% of it.

So you will fall somewhere on the continuum for each mindset type below:

  • Growth Mindset <> Fixed Mindset

  • Positive Mindset <> Negative Mindset

  • Entrepreneurial Mindset <> Worker Bee Mindset

  • Abundance Mindset <> Scarcity Mindset

  • Challenge Mindset <> Threat Mindsetโ€‹

  • โ€‹Mindful Mindset <> Mindless Mindset

These mindsets are changeable.

If you fall on the low side of any continuum, you can engage in thought exercises and activities to push yourself up the continuum towards more beneficial mindsets.

Some of the benefits of a positive mindset and outlook include:

  • Increased longevity

  • Reduced risk or symptoms of depression

  • Lower levels of distress and anxiety

  • Greater resistance to the common cold and immunity in general

  • Better psychological and physical wellbeing

  • Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Better coping skills during times of stress and hardship

  • Greater resilience and resourcefulness

  • Better communication and relationships with others

  • More happiness, fulfilment and meaning in your life

  • A greater sense of purpose in life

  • A greater sense of connectedness to your fellow human beings, and spiritually

Here’s 5 quick & easy ways to shift your mindset today.

  1. Slow Your Speech – Practice slowing down your response time, the number of words you use to communicate and the speed with which you speak.

  2. Pick one negative thought you have about yourself and write a reverse statement. When you catch yourself saying it out loud or in your head, stop and say the reverse, positive statement. It doesn’t matter if you believe it or not yet. Just say it!

  3. Listen to your words. Practice deleting negative words from your vocabulary. Ex: never/can’t/but/if only/should’ve/could’ve/would’ve. Too many to list here. Pick the ones you hear yourself using.

  4. Spend 15 minutes with yourself. No phone, no people, no TV, nothing. Be patient with yourself. No matter what thoughts arise, dismiss them. Breathe deeply into your lower abdomen, eyes closed, shoulders relaxed. It’s 15 minutes. You can do it!

  5.  Write down, post, carry, repeat, even out loud this truth,

    “On this day, I am enough!”
